Main Transparency Objectives
Hackensack University Medical Center has developed a communications plan to facilitate transparency and publicize the mission and work of Pursuing Perfection. The main objectives of the communications plan are to:
promote Pursing Perfection standards for each
targeted area of care
to local and national communities while addressing precise outcomes and stimulating dialogue among physicians, professional staff, patients, the media, government and medical officials, and the community-at-large.
disseminate to the global community the culture developed and accentuated — from all levels of the institution — the CEO and chiefs of service, the executive and management teams, through to the entire day-to-day, hands-on workforce.
communicate the rewards of 15 years of positive changes in culture as a medical center challenged to show that change is possible by putting advanced practices into place, pursuing new institutional goals through executive leadership, while at the same time pursuing dramatic improvements in patient care.

Sharing Begins at Home: Propelling Internal Changes
Organizational Transparency:
Project results guide senior administrators, who work with the appropriate department leadership to implement policies and procedures that support improved care processes. Hackensack University Medical Center already has committee mechanisms in place to ensure that organizational-level results are reviewed regularly through a two-way flow of recommendations at all executive levels.
Enhancing the Organizational Culture:
Internal promotion and emphasis about the importance of
Pursuing Perfection goals
and initiatives cultivates an organizational culture that prides itself on setting and maintaining higher standards for healthcare and safety. Hackensack University Medical Center encourages its employees to participate in patient-focused interactions, an initiative that is driven by a recognition program that recognizes and rewards employees who provide outstanding, high quality care.
The importance of the Pursuing Perfection initiatives is stressed to the medical center’s employees and volunteers through monthly management meetings, formal committee meetings, and the weekly internal newsletter, Happenings. Word-of-mouth also has been one of the medical center's effective methods of communication — a tool that will help to culturally spread the momentum of
Pursuing Perfection aims and goals.
Other efforts to encourage Pursuing Perfection ideals entail having human resources specialists teach communication skills, patient/customer service, teamwork, conflict management skills, innovation, cultural competency, coaching and mentoring, patient rights, and confidentiality. Even prior to the launch of the grant program, the medical center had already begun to foster the perfection mission with the creation of the Consumer Advisory Council. This consumer group (comprised of both members of the internal and external communities) meets on a regular basis and gives participants the opportunity to share thoughts and experiences — feedback that has helped to identify ways to improve care. This flow of information and interaction will be expanded and shared to a more universal audience as the grant program results become more available.
