Preventive Medicine
Several medical center physicians have begun using a systemized process for early screening and diagnosis that encourages a higher standard of preventive care. The targeted preventive measures are based on the current guidelines of a number of medical organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the United States Preventive Services Task Force. They include mammography, pap smears, and bone density for women; prostate screening for men; eye and foot examinations for persons with diabetes; the prescription of blood thinners for atrial fibrillation or beta blockers and aspirin after heart attack; vision and hearing screening for older adults; immunizations; exercise programs; smoking cessation programs; and other tests, such as colonoscopy and cholesterol screening. Participating physicians use a printed checklist of health status questions and related preventive care measures as a guideline for ordering the appropriate tests or distributing patient education materials.
