Maintaining Youthful Skin

June 8th, 2010

OK, we all know that we get older and our skin changes.  We also know that the sun damages our skin and causes wrinkles, so is there anything we can do?  First we can stay out of the sun.  Next we can have a good skin regimen that replaces what we are missing in out skin.  We need 4 basic things that as we age, we do not have. One is water, yes we dry out and we need hydration.  Two is vitamins, like vitamin C.  Third we need proteoglycans that help hold onto the hydration in our skin.  Fourth we need retin A.

So we need to replace these things with our daily skin care regime.  There are products that are great at doing this, such as Skinmedica.  Call for a free skin care consultation today.  You won’t regret taking care of your skin.  201-99-5588.  As dor Dr. Kari.

Breast Reconstruction at Hackensack University Medical Center

May 21st, 2010

When you are faced with a diagnosis of breast cancer there is so much information thrown at you it is very difficult to go through it in an emotionally distraught state.  I will try and breast down breast reconstruction options so it is easier to understand.

There are basically three ways to reconstruct a breast and then within these three ways there are subcategories.  The first way is implant reconstruction.  The second way is to use your own tissue only.  The third was is to use your own tissue and an implant.

So lets take implant reconstruction first.  This can be done in two stages or one.  It is more commonly down as two stages where in the first stage a tissue expander is used to stretch the skin and then an implants is used afterward.  In the second way- using your own tissue.  This can be either your tummy or back traditionally.  Other areas can be used as well but they are less common.  There are many ways to do this operation and that is better explained when you see your reconstructive surgeon.  The third was is using both your tissue as well as an implant.  This is usually done using the back muscle and skin with an implant underneath.

I have been doing breast reconstruction at Hackensack University Medical Center in NJ for a number of years.  If you want to talk to a doctor about this please call my office, Dr. Kari Colen at 201-996-5588.  I can then more clearly talk about the invidual operations and what is best for you.

Breast Reduction

May 18th, 2010

I can tell you that many of my happiest patients are breast reduction patients.  After carrying that weight around for so long, one is finally free to run without two jogging bras and buy bathing suits and sundresses.  If this is something you are considering really think about it.  Now we can do breast reductions with a shorter scar if that is what concerns you.

At Hackensack University Medical Center in NJ, this procedure can be done in our beautiful outpatient facility.  You go home the same day.  If you have any questions or just want to be evaluated, please call Dr. Kari Colen at 201-996-5588.

Questions about Labiaplasty

May 13th, 2010

So what is labiaplasty.  It is a very commonly performed outpatient surgery where the labia minora are made smaller.  So what does this mean you ask?  Women havetwo sets of labia (lips) surrounding the vagina.  The outer lips (the hairy ones) are called labia majora and the inner ones are called labia minora.  Many women have the labia minora hanging out of the majora.  This can me uncomfortable for many and unappealing as well.

So in one hour we can make the smaller lips smaller and give a more youthful appearance to the vagina area.  Also bathing suits and leotard will fit and look better.

Please fell free to email me questions or come in for an appointment.  I am in The Hackensack New Jersey office on Mondays and Tuesdays and te number is 201-996-5588.  You can also see me in New York City the rest of the week.

Difference between Fillers and Botox

May 13th, 2010

So this may be so obvious to many but I still receive many questions about botox and fillers.  People still ask for botox to help with the lines around the mouth and filler for the lines on the forehead.  So I will try and clear up the confusion.

Botox is a neurotoxin.  This means it stops muscles from moving.  So the lines betweenthe eyebrows and forehead are paralyzed by the botox.  The lines go away because these lines are created by the movement of your muscles.  This is also great from the lines on the side of your eyes and the band in the neck.

Filler like juvaderm or restylane fill in lines made by gravity and sun.  Like the lines around the mouth.  We also use filler to add volume to the face.  A youthful face is full.  To look younger it in nice to have an apple to your cheek and a smooth jawline.

If you have any questions or would like to see me in consultation please call 201-996-5588.  You can see me in New Jersey on Mondays and Tuesdays and New York City on Wed/Thurs/Fri.

New Fraxel RE: PAIR NOW AVAILABLE

April 27th, 2010

HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER

OFFERS NEW FRAXEL RE: PAIR™ DUAL LASER SYSTEM

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) is pleased to offer a breakthrough procedure for correcting aged and damaged skin – Fraxel re:pair™ treatment. You can dramatically improve your skin today and avoid a facelift tomorrow – all within a single treatment – without the prolonged downtime or adverse reactions of other resurfacing treatments.

“This non-surgical treatment is a safe, effective, and comfortable solution to attaining smoother, tighter, more even skin tone and texture,” said Steven Colen, M.D., D.D.S., chairman of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at HUMC.
“It’s an opportunity to remove years from your appearance without undergoing surgery – leaving patients looking good and, equally important, feeling good.”

Fraxel re:pair treatment tightens the skin, actually defending against the loose, saggy skin that typically comes with age. Fraxel re:pair uses points of light to precisely treat thousands of microscopic areas of your skin. The treatment penetrates deep into the skin to remove old, damaged skin cells. It stimulates the body’s own natural healing process, and replaces the cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin.

Results of the treatment are both immediate and progressive. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer, look brighter, and show more even tone. The next three to six months will bring more improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to heal. Depending on age and skin condition, results can last for years.

To learn more about Fraxel re:pair, please call 201-996-5588.
