Our experts in plastic surgery and dermatologic surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center are at the forefront of emerging technologies in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. New technologies and products are now available, which can achieve excellent results with minimal downtime for patients.
There have been tremendous advances in the use of lasers, fillers and botulinum toxins so that treatments can be tailored to the individual needs of each patient.
Significant advances have been made in laser technology over the past five years, and we are proud to offer a wide range of state-of-the-art lasers for patients to choose from.
For vascular lesions, such as port wine stains in infants, children and adults, we have the Candela® Perfecta laser, which is probably the safest, most effective laser for treating these patients. There is minimal discomfort and very low risk of scarring or changes in skin color. This laser is also perfect for treating the disabling redness of rosacea, acne, angiomas, dilated blood vessels, as well as being approved for the treatment of raised or red scars.
This laser heats abnormally dilated blood vessels from the inside without injuring the overlying skin, when used correctly. We have trained physicians who can determine if a patient is appropriate for laser treatment and the correct dosage and parameters to use.
Fractional resurfacing is a wonderful new laser technique that can achieve dramatic results in as little as a week, which only improve over the next six months. Older carbon dioxide lasers were terrific in skin tightening, improvement of skin tone and removal of wrinkle, age spots and irregular pigment. However, it was complicated in the past with permanent loss of pigment in certain areas, bacterial and viral infections and even permanent scarring. In addition, the wound healing process was very involved and patients often wouldn't leave their homes for almost two weeks following the treatment, with months of persisting redness.
Hackensack University Medical Center Offers New Fraxel re:pair® Dual Laser System
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) is pleased to offer a breakthrough procedure for correcting aged and damaged skin - Fraxel re:pair® treatment. You can dramatically improve your skin today and avoid a facelift tomorrow - all within a single treatment - without the prolonged downtime or adverse reactions of other resurfacing treatments.
"This non-surgical treatment is a safe, effective, and comfortable solution to attaining smoother, tighter, more even skin tone and texture," said Steven Colen, M.D., D.D.S., chairman of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at HUMC. "It's an opportunity to remove years from your appearance without undergoing surgery - leaving patients looking good, and, equally important, feeling good."
Fraxel re:pair treatment tightens the skin, actually defending against the loose, saggy skin that typically comes with age. Fraxel re:pair uses points of light to precisely treat thousands of microscopic areas of your skin. The treatment penetrates deep into the skin to remove old, damaged skin cells. It stimulates the body's own natural healing process, and replaces the cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin.
Results of the treatment are both immediate and progressive. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer, look brighter, and show more even tone. The next three to six months will bring more improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to heal. Depending on age and skin condition, results can last for years.
Our specially trained physicians can assess your skin and advise you if you are an appropriate candidate.

In addition to lasers, the injection of a variety of fillers has allowed physicians today to truly re-sculpt the face. Depending on the individual's needs, there is now a dizzying array of fillers to choose from. A physician trained in the use of these materials can properly advise a patient as to which filler or combination of fillers would be most appropriate to achieve the results that they are looking for.
Human collagen, which does not require skin testing, is safe and effective for the treatment of very superficial lines in the face. This can be done with minimal pain and immediate correction; a patient can have it done at lunch and return to the office without a problem.
For deeper lines and wrinkles as well as more longevity, we use a variety of hyaluronic acid fillers, which are the most commonly used filler materials in the world. They also do not require skin testing, producing immediate improvement and mild bruising or swelling. They can even be used to enhance the lips and add volume to the face.
Thankfully, if there is a problem with hyaluronic acids, which is rare, it can be dissolved with an available enzyme. There are many different types of hyaluronic acid fillers available, and you should discuss which would be best for you with your physician. These fillers can last 4 to 6 months or longer.
Biostimulators act to immediately fill the skin, and then the material stimulates the patient's body to respond by laying down new collagen, resulting in a much more long lasting correction. Radiesse® is a bone-derived material which can last as long as a year or more and Sculptra® can last even longer, but cannot be injected superficially and may require more than one session to achieve the desired results.
Noninvasive cosmetic lasers and filler treatments have revolutionized our ability to achieve natural and long lasting safe improvement in wrinkles, tone and pigment. We have aesthetically-minded, excellent, trained physicians who can consult with you and help you choose the best treatment for you.
