Julius M. Gardin, M.D., chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center, has served as the chief of cardiology at St John Hospital, Detroit, Michigan and University of California Irvine Medical Center and School of Medicine. He is a former president of the American Society of Echocardiography and the Society for Geriatric Cardiology and is currently associate editor of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. He was awarded the Seymour Gordon Award for Distinguished Achievement by the Detroit Chapter of the American Heart Association. He was active in securing a Blue Cross Center of Excellence Award, and certification by Solucient® for St. John Hospital for being one of the top 100 cardiovascular hospitals and one of the top 15 major medical teaching hospitals.
Dr. Gardin has helped develop programs in echocardiography, preventive cardiology and lipid management, computed tomographic coronary angiography, carotid stenting, and peripheral vascular intervention. With National Institutes of Health funding, he established a core echocardiography laboratory for multicenter studies in younger and elderly adults. With American Heart Association funding, he studied subclinical cardiovascular disease for Mexican-Americans. Other accomplishments include having received a Certificate in Healthcare Administration from UCLA, having spent a research sabbatical year (funded by the National Institutes of Health) in a cardiac molecular biology laboratory at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and having been an author on 175 original research publications.
Under Dr. Gardin’s leadership, the Department of Internal Medicine at HUMC offers a comprehensive array of high-quality services. It enlists the aid of a broad-based team of medical experts dedicated to providing quality patient-first care.
The department is comprised of the following subspecialties: Allergy and Immunology; Cardiology; Complementary Medicine; Dermatology; Digestive Diseases and Nutrition; Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism; General Internal Medicine; Geriatrics; Hematology and Oncology; Infectious Diseases; Nephrology; Neurology; Palliative Care; Parasitology; Pulmonology; and Rheumatology.
Physicians within the Department of Internal Medicine treat both common and complex illnesses. Because internal medicine is expansive, physicians and other medical professionals represent a wide spectrum of subspecialties.
“The department’s scope is huge,” explains Dr. Gardin. “There are currently 16 different divisions with approximately 500 doctors on staff.”
The Department of Internal Medicine sets the highest standards for diagnosing and treating all pathologies of the various internal organs and systems.
