HUMC Doctors Honor Nurses with "Trees of Life"

In honor of National Nurses Week, which is celebrated annually May 6-12 throughout the U.S., the doctors, researchers, and scientists from The Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center presented each of the 250 nurses who work there with a three and one-half foot tall hibiscus tree. “We dedicate these trees of life to our nurses in recognition for all they do to make a difference every single day for our patients, our doctors, and our staff,” says Andre Goy, M.D., deputy director of The Cancer Center.

Radiation Therapy Symposium at The Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center to Highlight New Treatment Modalities

The field of radiation therapy is undergoing a revolution in new treatment methods and applications. Professionals engaged in the practice of radiation therapy are invited to learn about the latest advances in their specialty at The Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center’s Second Annual Radiation Therapy Symposium. The program will be held Saturday, June 7, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Leading Geriatric Oncologists to Educate Patients and Professionals at 5/15/08 Seminar

Cancer can affect older adults in ways that are different from how it impacts younger persons. Patients over age 55 may face special challenges in battling the disease – from treatment that must be adjusted to account for other co-existing medical conditions to difficulty in getting to appointments to a lack of a support system. Older persons may be cognitively impaired and not able to take their medication properly, or they may have difficulty with the high cost of cancer care.

Chief of Urologic Oncology Authors Book Chapter on "The Art and Science of Urology"

Hackensack, N.J., Mar. 25, 2008—Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., chairman of the Department of Urology at Hackensack University Medical Center, authored a book chapter for the “Inside the Minds” series of books called “Inside the Minds: The Art and Science of Urology.” Dr. Sawczuk, who is also chief of the Division of Urologic Oncology at The Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, contributed the chapter called “The Urologist of the New Millennium.”

Researchers at HUMC's Cancer Center Participate in Study to Treat Advanced Melanoma

HACKENSACK, N.J., Mar. 19, 2008—The skin cancer melanoma is one of the fastest growing cancers, rising at a rate of 3 to 5 percent annually during the past 30 years. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008, about 60,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in the United States and 8,000 people will die from it. 

Specialists in Radiation Oncology to Present Brachytherapy Research at International Meeting

HACKENSACK, N.J., Mar. 10, 2008—Garth H. Ballantyne, M.D., chief of minimally invasive surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, and Robert Glenning, executive vice president and chief financial officer at the medical center, were interviewed recently by the New York Times for an article about da Vinci surgical robots. The article focused on the success of Intuitive Surgical, the company that produces the da Vinci.

Radiation Oncology specialist to speak at national conference in June

HACKENSACK, N.J., Mar. 5, 2008—Carmen Figueroa, C.M.D., a certified medical dosimetrist at The Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, will present her research in prostate cancer treatment at the annual meeting of the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists in June.
